insta life

Quite a while back, I decided to go on a facebook hiatus/point of no return and later deemed that “the book” was no longer for me.  I wanted to dedicate a little more time to this blog and keep myself off of what I called a “time vampire.”  While hanging out with my good buddy Eric, I was turned onto the app, Instagram.  Since then, I have more or less been using Instagram to document and photograph the things I’ve been up to lately.  From epic rides, to coffee & donuts, to some pretty amazing scenery, I enjoy shooting things that I can look back on and remember how life was on that day.

All of the photos I post on my feed are taken on my phone, and not my actual digital camera.  It is sometimes a bit of a challenge capturing the greatness of something with a phone, but I believe it gives me the opportunity to make a great shot or not.  Feel free to browse my Instagram feed, which is located in the Instagram link at the top of the page.

walking the causeway

Just through the town of Yampa lies the Flat Tops Wilderness, home to the Devil’s Causewaywhich sits amongst many other great trails throughout the Flat Top range.  I’ve hiked the causeway a few times now and finally brought my camera and a couple of lenses with me.  The top of the causeway sits at about 11,700ft above sea level and at its narrowest point measures a little over 3 feet wide with sheer rock cliff faces on either side.  Crossing the causeway is never a boring journey.

a few from winter

Some highlights from this winter… Visited a 10th mountain hut on Vail pass, skinned uphill a few times, cross country ski’d more than past years, and rode less than 50 days at the resort.  Who says you can’t still have fun without a killer snow year?  With bike season quickly approaching, it’s on for commuting… fresh dirt is just around the corner.

late season grass still pokes through the thin snow cover in late feb.

waking up early to go dawn patrolling with allen had it’s perks; aside from getting fresh groomers, hot coffee & donuts, the occasional moon up before sun-up.

Switzerland. in 20 photos

This post has been put off for a year now… I was getting ready to leave for Switzerland this time last year, and now I’m finally getting some photos up.  Here are a few highlights from the trip. Tough to keep it to only 20 photos or less, but a full album would be A LOT of pictures!

people watching @ DIA before the flight.

SBS CO

I’ve been enjoying Steamboat this past winter and have had so many opportunities to take photos of the scenery and all of the snow we have seen this winter… unfortunately as it seems to happen more times than not, the camera stayed away in its bag while I was out enjoying the fresh turns.  Luckily my camera was in arms length for a couple of opportunities, so I figured I would share for those moments.  photos and gallery can be viewed below.

The Sleeping Giant tucked in under a blanket of fresh morning snow, followed by a Colorado painted sunset to say good evening. 4/6/11

A full view of the first sunset shot. Sleeping Giant on the distant horizon here.

This was a common sight around Steamboat this winter… lots of snow fell to form some sweet looking snow formations.

A little sunset, a little snow… the rest of these photos can be viewed below in the gallery.

thanks for looking.

Riding in the land of sand.

The Southern Rockies play host to one of Colorado’s coolest geological wonders.  The Great Sand Dunes are a pocket of dunes that stretch for miles and miles.  Just behind the dunes lie snow covered mountains as far as the eye can see.

Riding on sand is a lot different than you would think and if you fall you won’t be getting a nice cool Colorado face shot… you’ll get a mouth full of sand.  Here are some photos from Katie and I’s trek to the Sand Dunes just last spring.

katie scopes a drop in point up ahead. great sand dunes, co.

travel!

Katie and I are off to road trip out to the north east for the fall colors.  I will continue taking my photo a day in addition to many more I am sure.  It may be a couple of weeks before I get back to the blog for updating, but have no fear there will be plenty to gaze at as soon as I get a chance to update!  See you all in a couple of weeks!

This past winter my grandfather passed away.  As he was in the Navy for his entire career, he had the honor of being buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.  Below are some photos from the trip to D.C., truly a beautiful ceremony. rest in peace grandpa.
